Why Trees Matter

Hi dear readers,

Today, I would like to share an article I found about Trees.  Why Trees ? The answer is simple, Trees are on the front lines of our changing climate and if they start dying it means that something is wrong with the weather.

When you will read this article, you will understand “how little we know” about trees impact. For instance, do you know that :

” Trees are nature’s water filters, capable of cleaning up the most toxic wastes, including explosives, solvents and organic wastes, largely through a dense community of microbes around the tree’s roots that clean water in exchange for nutrients, a process known as phytoremediation. Tree leaves also filter air pollution. A 2008 study by researchers at Columbia University found that more trees in urban neighborhoods correlate with a lower incidence of asthma. “

That is an example of things you can learn about trees. Also, many searchers and chemist such as Katsuhiko Matsunaga has worked on the impact of trees on the nature.

We have underestimated the importance of trees. They are not merely pleasant sources of shade but they are also the planet’s heat shield. They keep the concrete and asphalt of cities and suburbs 10 or more degrees cooler and protect our skin from the sun’s harsh UV rays.

So, dear readers, do you think that we have to pay attention to  trees ?  Do we have underestimated the importance of trees ?

Global Warming is not the only disease…

I just want to show you the lyrics of this song because it sounds so true to me :

What about sunrise
What about rain
What about all the things
That you said we were to gain…
What about killing fields
Is there a time
What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we’ve shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

What have we done to the world
Look what we’ve done
What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son…
What about flowering fields
Is there a time
What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine…
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don’t know where we are
Although I know we’ve drifted far

MJ is one the artist who wrote a song dedicated a sog for eath and its diseases. As you can see in the video, the are many other diseases such as :

  • Deforestation
  • War
  • Pollution
  • Human activities

Unfortunately, the poorest countries in the World feel, more than us, the impact of these diseases and particulary children. To end with this article, I will quote a lyric from MJ’s song :

“Heal The World
Make It A Better Place
For You And For Me
And The Entire Human Race”

IAOOS – (Ice Atmosphere, Arctic Ocean Observing System)

For my last year as trainee engineer I am going to work on a project called IAOOS which is based on the implementation of 15 weather forecast masts in Arctic Ocean.

IAOOS goal is to establish a radiation balance from  physical characteristics of the ocean and the atmosphere around North pole. To do that, every mast will have to make  a continuous monitoring, with real-time transmission of data. It is expected that the whole system works for at least 7 years.

Many laboratories are going to work with the CNRS and they all specialized in different domain :

  • LOCEAN : Study of  the processes of ocean variability and their interactions with climate variability;
  • CNRS DT INSU : Aid for technical projects for laboratories in domain such as Electronic, Mechanic and Optic;
  • IPEV : French Polar Institute
In this project I will have to manage and schedule the development of the computing part. A first test is scheduled for March 2012 at “Mont Aigoual” which is a laboratory located in a mountain at 1562m height. The goal of this test is to study the way a  weather forecast mast will react when it will be implement in polar conditions.

The Great Global Warming Swindle

The Great Global Warming Swindle is a polemical documentary film that suggests that the scientific opinion on climate change is influenced by funding and political factors.

The film, made by British television producer Martin Durkin, presents scientists, economists, politicians, writers, and others who dispute the global warming. The channel described the film as a polemic that drew together the well-documented views of a number of respected scientists to reach the same conclusions.

Although the documentary was welcomed by people who denigrate the global warming , it was criticised by scientific organisations and individual scientists.

The full version of this documentary is available on YouTube with (be careful there are eight parts) or without English subtitles.

Global Warming Skeptic Organizations

All around the world many non-profit organizations are studying the  influence of global warming. All these companies are grouped together in the Global Warming Skeptic Organizations.

Now, I am going to compare two different companies in this organisation :

The Centre for the Study of Carbon Dioxide and Global Change was created to write reports and record sound commentary on new developments in the world-wide scientific quest to determine the climatic and biological consequences of the on-going rise in the air’s CO2 content.  To do this it makes a weekly online publication of its CO2 Science magazine, which contains editorials.

In addition, to help students and teachers gain greater insight into the biological aspects of this phenomenon, the Centre maintains on-line instructions on how to conduct CO2 enrichment and depletion experiments in its Global Change Laboratory (located in its Education Centre section. Furthermore, the centre writes position papers.

The Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine is a non-profit research institute established in 1980 to conduct basic and applied research in subjects immediately applicable to increasing the quality, quantity, and length of human life. However, this company is not convinced by the fact that global warming is potentially dangerous for the Earth.

The Hearland Institute recently held their second International Conference on Climate Change concluded its 2-1/2 -day run March 10, 2009 in New York City after confronting the theme “Global warming: Was it ever really a crisis?” The answer was a resounding “No.”

Moreover, DR NOAH ROBINSON from TELECOSM in 2007 also held a conference about “The Global Warming Myth”. During this presentation Dr Robinson clearly attempted to show Greenhouse gases have not got any bad effects on Earth.

Apart from that, they also make a petition to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto :

As you can see there are many companies in Global Warming Skeptic Organizations but they have not got the same opinion. On the one hand, the Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide & Global Change agreed to say that global warming is dangerous for the Earth making online publications, position papers and also advice to people in how to reduce the emission of CO2 in the atmosphere. On the other hand, we have got the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine which says that global warming problematic is hindering the advance of science technology. They made a conference about that but also a petition to the government.

However, both of this companies are non-making profits companies and they both lead research to explain their opinion. They take actions to show their ideas.

So dear readers, what about you ? Global Warming => good or bad ?

Global Warming Puts the Arctic on Thin Ice

Hi everyone !

Nowadays, Global Warming is a scientific phenomenon that clearly shows our planet is sick. Many researchers and famous laboratory such as CNRS (where I work actually) are working on this subject and especially about the consequences at Poles.

The main part of their research is focus on observing and understanding the evolution of ice caps melting in the Artic, to find the reasons why this melting happening and finally what impacts it will have in the future.

At the moment, there are many ways to follow the evolution of ice caps melting using some scientific instruments like used in OPTIMISM’s project. However, it will take a year to get all the data and make scientific analyses and during this time the situation will become worse and worse.

Who can solve that problem? The answer is quite simple: It’s me & you. For instance, we can leave our cars at home if we really do not need them, we can reduce our houses’ energy consumption switching off all the lights. There are so many Green Energies but the technology to implement the at home still expensive it’s pity.

The following link shortly & clearly explains the Arctic’s shrinking ice cap and its global significance. If you any questions leave a comment I will try to answer ASAP.

Global warming for dummies

What did you say…Global Warming ?

Ecoman: Global Warming is a problem caused by the evil Greenhouse gases:

  • Nitrous Oxide
  • Water Vapour
  • Methane
  • Carbon Dioxide

Little Timmy: Where do they come from Ecoman ?

Ecoman: You see Timmy many things help to in power the evil Greenhouse gases:

  • Some come from the throwing forest
  • Others come from farm animals
  • Most gases get their power from Human Society (fossil fuels)

Little Timmy: Why are the Greenhouse gases bad? I don’t understand

Ecoman: When the sunshine down on Earth the atmosphere which surrounds the world helps keeping the heat the sun to make us warm this is called the Greenhouse effect. However, when we burn too much fossil fuel the Greenhouse gases are able to block the escaping sunlight and keep it trapped inside the atmosphere. This is called Global Warming

Little Timmy: Do you mean that the Greenhouse gases want to hurt me?

Ecoman:  If Global Warming is allowed to continue the future could be a very different place. We can have worse hurricanes and weather. Crops may die out at certain point of the world. If higher temperature melts icebergs then the see level could rise and cover entire sections of land.

Little Timmy: How can we stop Global Warming?

Ecoman:  The road to solve in this crisis is long and hard. Indeed we need to work together to plant trees, petition to government and use less fossil fuel. Together we can help stop the Greenhouse gases and protect Earth for years to come.
